"Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything
has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same;
opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree;
extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes
may be reconciled."--The Kybalion.
The 4th Hermetic Principle of Nature tells us that everything, in essence, exists in opposites. Moreover, these opposites are complimentary to each other rather than opposing. As all Principles are important and are dependent on each other it is that of polarity, if mastered, one can truly step into their power and live a happy and fulfilling life.
The existence of hot & cold, hate & love, good & evil, attraction & disconnection are what gives us the full spectrum of life. The thesis and anti-thesis are on the same frequency but are vibrating at different degrees. To put it plainly, good would not exist without evil (both of these terms being extremely relative), and, in fact, they are one and the same. It is this deep contrast that gives us the power of decision making, to know what we do want is to know what we don't want. To say "yes" to one thing is to say "no" to everything else. The polarized opposites are a vital part of how we distinguish and make sense of life.
Newton's 3rd Law of Motion states, "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." This reasoning sums up the Principle of Polarity perfectly. Everything in creation has its opposite counterpart, thus to achieve the balance that this Universe is based upon. You wouldn't know what it means to love someone if you didn't know what it feels like to hate, this is the paradox that gives birth to worlds of opportunities.
Shadow work is an important aspect in polarity. To work with ones shadow is to learn how to alchemize darkness into light. Moreover, the light itself cannot exist without the shadow/darkness. People have a tendency to feel guilt and shame for who they are, who their darker side expresses them to be. So they in turn repress their shadow which will only grow darkness exponentially. And there we have another example of polarity: expression and repression. And as the quote which opened this post reveals, "all paradoxes may be reconciled." To reconcile repression you must exercise expression, and in this case of shadow work exercising expression would be to allow the darker aspects of your personality to come through. Simply being in a state of allowance grants the space for what exists to show itself, and then the work can begin. Alchemizing that shadow and turning it into a brighter light...but this is an entirely different post for another time!
Even the Principle of Polarity has its own opposite: depolarization, and what could also be known as "oneness", or what the Buddha would call "The Middle Path."
How to Apply the Principle of Polarity to Your Life:
So we now that we overstand there is a positive to any negative, this can be applied to everyday life. If you find yourself stuck in a negative feedback loop of unworthiness, fear, hate, anger etc., simply remember its polar aspects of worthiness, courage, love, and joy are also present. And now you get to make a decision. Remember earlier we talked about how the contrast helps us make decisions, which in turn creates our reality? It is in this moment of seeming despair you have the opportunity to choose to focus on the joyful parts. So you got dumped? That's amazing, space has now been created for someone to come into your life that is actually a match for you. You're down to your last few dollars in your bank account, and rent is due next week? What a great opportunity to exercise that supercomputer which lives in your head to brainstorm and execute ideas that will get you the money you need. All of the answers live inside of you, and so it is up to you to embrace the contrast, see the polarity for what it is, and choose the better feeling thought. Easier said than done?
Only if you think that's true :)
